Grandma.

Some people are terrified of clowns. Maybe thats why she liked them? She always had a different opinion, always liked to be controversial. Openly called herself the 'black sheep' of the family. The 'bad' grandma.
I didn't think that losing her would affect me as much as what it has. That sounds terrible.
When she found out that she was dying she started to give away her clown collection. She told me I could take as many as I wanted, but it felt so strange. I quietly took a paper mache clown that I could remember wanting to play with when I was little. She wasn't happy with me just taking one, and Scarlet and I left with our arms full. And now I'm so glad. I walk past them, and think of her.
We spent a week in Sydney, spending time with family and catching up with friends. I saw my grandmother a few times in hospital, the last time I saw her she had moved from the hospital into a nursing home. She wasn't in any pain, and aside from having lost a lot of weight she was the same as always. telling me I wear too much black. And telling me that if I dare dye my hair black again she WILL come back and haunt me. When we said goodbye she pulled me in close, and said that she wouldn't get to hug me again. I laughed. An uncomfortable laugh, and also because she seemed so OK, I thought she had months left. Not hours. But she knew.

On our first visit to the hospital I noticed some yellow roses at the florist on the way in. I quickly grabbed them, not thinking much of it. Up in her room I briefly showed them to her, and just placed them on the bench beside her- I didn't even put them in a vase. On the second visit I noticed that the yellow roses were in a vase, and had fully bloomed. They were beautiful, but a tiny bunch, compared to all the other flowers in the room. When we went to see her in the nursing home she had taken that one bunch of flowers with her. She said the yellow flowers were her favorite. By this stage the roses were wilting, and browning around the edges. I was surprised that she had bothered to take them from the hospital.

I thought about it later, and those flowers were how that week was. It was so nice, catching up with my grandmother. Even tho it was in a hospital, she was still a feisty, talkative yellow rose. A few days later she was still in full bloom. Opinionated as ever (and apparently red boots and a blue flower in my hair didn't detract from the black outfit....). But as the flowers wilted so did she. It was just so quick.

Grandmothers are so special. Her love and support was unwavering. She would happily tell you if she didn't agree with something you might be doing, but once she said her bit she was happy.

Oh, and as for having the final word. I wasn't allowed to wear black to her funeral. When my uncle called me to tell me the funeral arrangements he just slid that one in "oh, and she said you weren't allowed to wear any black" So I wore white. With bright blue shoes. She would have approved :)

Grandmothers are so special, they should stay with us forever.

Ava's Tea Party

Yesterday we had our tea party for Ava, to celebrate the life of Ava Rosemeyer.

"Ava's tea party is about taking time. Making time. Moments put aside to love and laugh with those you adore."

Last year we had a larger gathering of friends and little girls to celebrate, this year it was 'just us'.
Scarlet, Jasper and I spent some afternoons last week planning the tea party, and making decorations. We decorated drinking glasses and straws, we made some fancy umbrellas for our pink milk. We colored paper doilies, and made place cards.
We baked cupcakes, made jelly, and I made my first batch of scones. Scarlet made fairy bread, and discovered fresh strawberries and cream.

We even had some guests from Canada arrive just in time (Thank you Michelle!!)

After some pink milk, and a cupcake or two, Scarlet just wanted to dance. It may have been the sugar content of the party?!? But she went a little crazy....and made it impossible to take pictures :) hmm, not that unusual for her to be too 'busy' for photo's!!

It was a lovely sunny afternoon, while Jasper slept thru the whole thing :( , the wind had fun blowing our decorations in all directions, and my camera was not co-operating with me (yes! I'll blame the camera) It didn't matter. We were together, eating cupcakes!
Thank you, so much, Sheye, for letting us be part of your tea party.

They can't take that away from me.....

I've been a little slow in blogging...but a couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of seeing two wonderful people get married. Scarlet was flower girl, and as soon as the ceremony was over she raced upstairs to change her shoes. She wore red ballet flats down the aisle, but ruby slippers were much more appropriate for dancing up a storm. She was the life of the party...

I have a love/hate 'thing' for weddings. David and I eloped, for a few reasons, but mainly because the idea of the white dress/ALL that attention for ME just was....scary. I do LOVE going to other peoples weddings, and I would love to plan a wedding, but I don't for a second regret not having one. Matt & Laurens wedding was just beautiful. Amazingly pretty and elegant, but so fun and relaxed. So fun, that I really didn't manage to get a good shot. Of the bride and groom.....or anything else. I was really disappointed the next day when I went thru all the pics that I took, for some reason I just wasn't in the 'taking photos' mode. I was in the 'drinking ridiculous amounts of champagne' mode.

Here are a couple of shots, that I think are kinda cute.

I tried to get David to wear a bow tie.....but he refused. This gentleman, in my opinion, was the best dressed on the night!!!!

This was totally accidental, but its one of my favorites!

Matt and Lauren were also incredibly sweet, and they played mine and Davids 'songs', yes, we have 2. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong- "They can't take that away from me" I tear up every time I hear it. They also played The Cure 'Love Song' which is the song David and I walked down the aisle to, or rather, walked down the rainforest walking track to :)

the little girl is 5...

It's a little late...we've been very busy, but last week my little baby girl turned 5. FIVE. Thats big.
she has a crush on the boy next door.
she wants to wear lipstick and perfume.
she loves shoes. and shopping.
she slams doors when she doesn't get her own way.
Luckily, she still loves dolls and dress ups, otherwise she could get confused for a 15 year old!

Happy Birthday baby girl. I love you to bits. xx

The little man is 2 :)

I can't believe that he is 2. TWO. Where did the time go?
Little Jasper. Crazy crazy Jasper. So full of energy....but HAPPY happy energy :)
He makes me smile ALL the time. He is more demanding than any other ANYTHING that I have ever dealt with before. He is craziness on legs. Cute little chubby legs. I love 2. I am sad that my little baby is already 2, and growing so fast.....but I love 2. its 'my' age. I love the size, the toddler 'chub' I love the talking....He isn't a baby, but he isn't a big boy either. He's perfect.

How quick its gone....from this....

to this.....We started the day with a lolly-pop for breakfast (hey, you don't turn 2 everyday!) Then we had the presents, which took a LONG time. Jasper was quite content with the first present, and really didn't want to open anything else :) We then went to the park for a picnic and play. Jas hasn't been too well this week, so excuse the face....some of it's ice cream!!
